Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) celebrates another year of academic progress, as the latest statewide testing results show districtwide growth in English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. Though statewide comparison data for this year are not yet available, the strong performance reflects the district’s continued commitment to high-quality instruction and student success, building on NMUSD’s longstanding record of outperforming state and county averages.

“These results are a testament to the hard work of our students and the commitment of our educators. From classrooms to homes, our entire community has played a role in supporting academic growth. We are proud of the progress made across all student groups, and we will continue building on this momentum to close gaps and elevate success for every learner,” said Superintendent Dr. Wesley Smith.

This year’s results revealed districtwide improvement in ELA, with the majority of schools showing growth. Nearly every grade level tested saw gains, and overall student proficiency increased. English learners and students with special needs also made notable strides, further closing performance gaps across the district.

In mathematics, students demonstrated growth districtwide, with the majority of schools improving their performance compared to last year. English learners and students with special needs also showed notable progress, reflecting the impact of targeted instructional strategies. As with ELA, nearly all grade levels showed gains, and as a district, Title I students increased in proficiency. With the implementation of the new math curriculum in 2024–25, 18 of 22 elementary schools reported growth, underscoring the effectiveness of these efforts.

Student achievement in science also increased this year, with the majority of schools showing improved performance. English learners, students with special needs, and Title I schools also made meaningful gains, as did nearly every grade level tested. Part of these gains may reflect the district’s emphasis on inquiry-based instruction, critical thinking, problem-solving, and hands-on learning experiences. It also reflects the investment in specialist science teachers for every elementary school and new science materials. Further growth is projected with the new elementary science curriculum being fully implemented this year.

“Through our strategic use of data, targeted interventions, and ongoing professional development for site leaders, teachers, and staff, we have built a strong foundation for student success,” said Assistant Superintendent of Achievement, Innovation, and Continuous Improvement Socorro Shiels. “While we celebrate these gains, we also recognize there is always room for growth and remain committed to supporting our educators in advancing efforts that ensure academic excellence for all students,” she said.

NMUSD will continue to build on its growth and academic achievement with a strong emphasis on professional development and instructional support. Districtwide professional learning will remain a priority. The districtwide early release or late start time is a powerful investment in teacher collaboration and a focus on real-time student data and instructional responsiveness.

Statewide California assessments provide only a snapshot of student progress at a single point in time, typically at the end of the school year, and are not the sole indicator of growth or achievement. NMUSD utilizes a range of assessments, internal data, and ongoing measures throughout the year to inform instruction and provide targeted support. While these results represent only part of the story, they highlight the impact of our collective efforts to support every student. Through targeted interventions, data-driven decision-making, and innovative programs, NMUSD is building on this momentum to prepare students for success in school, in their careers, and in life. With a commitment to academic excellence and overall well-being, we will continue to ensure that every student has the tools, skills, and confidence to thrive.
