Modern Scholars Academy

We would like to inform you about changes to our Modern Scholars program and an exciting model of support that will be implemented next year at Adams.  After evaluating and working with staff, we have created Success Through Academic Rigor (STAR) rotations, which will support all students with their academic success at Adams and better support their social emotional health. We have designed a new class structure for next year in kindergarten and fourth grade with all students academic needs being met through the STAR rotations which will help us get them ready for middle school.

For the 2019-2020 school year, the following changes will be implemented:

  • Incoming Kindergarten students will all be placed in mixed-ability homeroom classes with STAR rotations occurring during the school day.

  • Modern Scholars students meeting the academic and behavioral criteria of the program will remain in Modern Scholars Classes for grades 1 through 3.

  • All fourth grade students will be placed in mixed-ability homeroom classes with STAR rotations occurring during the school day.

Our current Modern Scholar classes in primary grades (K-2) will continue as a cohort each year until they reach fourth grade. When students reach fourth grade, they will be combined with mixed-ability groups and participate in the STAR rotation program, which will continue to build their proficiency based on individual needs.

Next year students in fourth grade will be placed in mixed-ability homeroom classes and will branch out to appropriate STAR rotations twice a day depending on their specific academic needs. For students who are at or above grade level the STAR rotation will include novel studies, GATE independent study showcase, socratic seminar, and additional enrichment programs. For students below grade level the STAR rotation will include a series of formative assessments to determine individual student needs that focus on foundational skills for every student to reach grade level proficiency.

We are excited for the STAR program and its goal of providing all students with high expectations and individualized support for success.
